AJCAA Undergraduate Bursary Award
Latest
We have just awarded bursary to 2 more worthy recipients for 2011 — Cai Yiming and Song Cai Feng.
Cai Yiming (PDG 03/07) — 1st Year undergraduate at NTU Communication Studies
Yiming possesses a strong passion for Wushu which he has cultivated since a very young age. Representing his schools and the country in numerous events, one of his notable achievements was clinching Gold in the Individual Event for the National Wushu Competition in 2007. He also returned to AJC to mentor Wushu juniors.
Since graduating from AJC, Yiming has been financially independent. He plans to continue to do so with a work/study scheme to lighten the family's burden. Yiming's father has retired and his younger siblings are still pursuing their studies.
Aspiring to be a copywriter, Yiming has clear goals to achieve his dreams. Currently pursuing a degree in a related field, he too hopes to acquire experience in advertising and marketing in the near future.
With a keen interest to do his part in helping those in need, Yiming joined AJCAA's 1st International Service-Learning Project "Melodies From The Heart" in Indonesia, co-leading the Logistics section. Designing print works and games, Yiming was also involved in sourcing for funds and sponsorships, hence contributing to the project's success. Thank you, Yiming!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the College, donors, audience, performers, crew and the organizing committee of Reunion 2 concert for their generous donations, support and effort in raising funds for the Bursary. It will be heartening for all AJCians and alumnus to know that the funds we have raised from the event shall extend the Bursary's lifespan for another 3 years!
Background of the AJCAA Bursary Award
Instituted in 2005, the AJC Alumni Association Bursary award aims to assist ex-AJCians who require financial assistance for their full-time undergraduate studies in the three local Autonomous universities — NTU, NUS, SMU.
Figures
With the inclusion of this year's awardees, 11 ex-AJCians have benefitted from the AJCAA Bursary Award.
Receiving its first donation of almost $14,000 at the 20th anniversary Homecoming dinner attended by past and present AJC staff and students, the Bursary has been receiving an average of almost $2,000 from generous donors annually. On behalf of all Bursary recipients, the Association would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all donors.
This year, we received a major boost in funds of over $10,000 from the Reunion 2 performance.
The Association started out with one annual award of $1,200. In 2008, this was increased to two awards annually to benefit more ex-AJCians. The award value has also increased to $1,500 each. This decision was made to support the recipients in view of the rising cost of living in Singapore.
Selection Process
Due to limited funds, the selection process is more stringent than many other bursaries. This is made possible with suitable voluntary ex-AJCians conducting interviews on shortlisted applicants. Interviewers often agonise over their choices as many applicants are equally qualified and all in need of the extra help they can get.
Besides assessing applicants' family financial situation (based on PCI) and academic results, the applicants are also evaluated on their character, especially on their self-help abilities, and even assessed for their contribution to the college or society at large. All these steps are put in place so as to sieve out the most deserving applicants.

Hence, it is only with your generous and continuous support that the Association can continue to help more ex-AJCians lighten their burdens as they strive to advance in their academic pursuits.
